never on a sunday is one of many names used by detroit s burden brothers otherwise known as octave one, a project that has been running since the early 90s. fans of detroit techno and house will already be familiar with the brothers output over the last 20+ years and day by day has long been at the top of the wants list for lovers of the motor city sound since it s 1992 release on 430 west.

for those turned on by the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired sounds of detroit deep house and techno, this ep from michael zucker s finale underground imprint (an offshoot of his finale sessions label) should be an essential purchase. with the likes of patrice scott, keith worthy and luke hess involved, you d expect the quality threshold to be high. it is, of course, resulting in a quartet of killer tracks. hess hypnotic techno jam -tolox- is a definite highlight, though it pales in comparison to the analogue futurism of keith worthy s brilliant -cyclops-. best of all, though, is scott s -journey into the unknown-, which bobs, weaves, bubbles and spits to the rush-inducing deep house sound of undulating synthesizer melodies and classic, transmat-style motor city rhythm

while their sporadic appearance remains a frustration, it s hard to find fault with boe recordings halal prepared series of eps. this third installment of the series, which lands 12 months after it s predecessor, contains another quarter of high quality deep house jams. the real highlights - to our ears, at least - are the two tracks that doff a cap to classic detroit techno, whilst keeping their feet firmly rooted in deep house. both -star struck- by chicago deep and havantepe s -plane waves- capture the retro-futurist spirit and stargazing electronics associated with the motor city perfectly. elsewhere, keep an eye out for taelue s -desolate dreams-, which offers a bittersweet trip into ultra-deep house territory.
